Editing 
I did most of the editing myself. Editing the sound, added text and editing the sounds in each scene. I made sure to show how our characters were awkward between each other adding long tense non-diegetic music throughout. I included hard cuts, fading out audio to show our story driven short film
Directing 
I also directed some scenes, as Georgie was in front of the camera, I directed her where to go and what to do, in order for it to look as realistic as possible. We all directed specific scenes, I directed the second last scene, which involved a confrontation between the father and Alice.
Camerawork
When it comes to camera work it involved mainly me and Rosie shooting most of the scenes. Georgie did some scenes but not as many since she was mainly in front of the camera. For the camera work I tried hard to implement many unique shots in order to make our film interesting to watch. We used two shots, mid shorts as well as large establishing shots throughout.

CONSTRUCTION: FILM TITLE

FILM TITLE

A Film title is essential to a success of a film. A film title is what consumers see and remember the film by. Therefore, by having a unique film title it allows the film to stand out and grab the attention of consumers walking by. So we decided to make sure our film title was unique and easily recognisable. We made sure the lettering of our title was sophisticated in order to tell the consumers that the film was a complex short film involving twists and turns.

The film title tells the audience what the film is going to be about, therefore we chose for our film to have long and slender letters. This gives across to the audience a deadly sense of mystery. As older books such as Sherlock Holmes had similar lettering, allowing us to convey the same mystery that surrounds those books. We also decided to have a full stop at the end of our title, as it further emphasised the 'Silent voices', and how the full stop shows how there is nothing more going to be said. Keeping the characters silent. This ties up with the ending of our movie, as Alice ends up being sectioned by her father Gary. Showing how her voice was silenced by her own father.

War Photographer Experiences

We were able to have an insight into the life of a war photographer, as Chris Beale told us in a YouTube video what it was like. He expressed to us the struggle he saw from the Rohingya people from Myanmar and how they have to live as  refugees in Bangladesh. Chris Beale described how he spent time looking at the refugee crisis whilst it was still going on in Myanmar and Bangladesh. 

He also told us about the current situation in the two countries, and how it is still tough between the two. Chris Beale experienced this all first handed as a photographer. This is going to be extremely useful as it is able to relate to our father character, Gary. Who was a previous war photographer. Allowing us to gain a deeper insight into his life.

PTSD Effects

• I have looked at the way PTSD affects the home life as well as how it affects the individual. How it is triggered and what causes it. Helping us integrate this into our father character, Gary. 
• Post Traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is an anxiety disorder caused by very stressful, frightening or distressing events. 
• Someone with PTSD often relives the traumatic event through nightmares and flashbacks, and may experience feelings of isolation, irritability and guilt. 
• They may also have problems sleeping, such as insomnia and find concentrating difficult. These symptoms are often severe and persistent enough to have a significant impact on the persons day to day life. 
• People with PTSD have intense, disturbing thoughts and feelings related to their experience that last long after the traumatic event has ended. They may relive the events through flashbacks or nightmares; they may feel sadness, fear or anger: and they may feel detached or estranged from other people. People with PTSD may avoid situations or people that remind them of the traumatic even, and they may have strong negative reactions to something as ordinary as ordinary as a loud noise or an accidental touch.

Mother as a Nurse


We portrayed the mother job as a nurse in order to represent a caring supportive figure. However, she is not seen to take on that role, leading to a harsh contrast between the stereotypical nurse and how she is in real life. Our issue that has been presented throughout our short film is how a professional nurse spots signs of illnesses and clear dysfunctional family. This has not been portrayed throughout our short film, because of how the mother is portrayed as the mother has taken on the parental role over the nursing role. Which makes her blind to the problematic family.

The father, Gary, is a sophisticated and manipulative who is trying to evade incrimination. This is shown in how he treats the mother, and how he is challenged by the mother threatening his leadership in the household.

Mental Health in a Young Girl

Mental illness is a topical issue right now, due to factors such as social media leading to anxiety and depression. We decided to include mental health firmly into our film, by having two of our leading characters, Gary and Alice sufferer from different kinds of mental health. We used mental health as well in a way to educate young people about how stressful and harmful it can be to live with someone suffering with mental illness. Showing how they need help, and how it can tragically affect a teenage girl.

We used mise-en-scene to symbolise the difference from a regular stereotypical home compared to a shattered and harmful place we have depicted in our short film. This is able to include the house being represented as being an uncomfortable and damaging place to live in. Whereas in reality someones house is seen as a place of comfort and a savehaven. We then try and show moments where cracks start to appear throughout our film. The place where people would usually feel the safest, would be you bed. The most pivotal moment is from Alice's bed where she realises what her dad is doing. 

Another example of how we used mise-en-scene to symbolise the horror and hardship in the house would be how the photograph shows a family member missing each day. Showing how the dad is keeping secrets, with photos with the mother have been scribbled out. This shows how the father is plotting, having private plans and how he has a secret agenda. Keeping his study completely private, not allowing anyone in there. Which shows how he has complete control over the house. Showing how disastrous it is for Emily to be caught in Gary's secretive study. 

Another way in which we created tension throughout the short film was by having the father, Gary's, shadow loom over Alice. We set the lighting in this way in order to show the dominance Gary has over Alice. This creates tension between the two, as they are now the only two left in the house, which shows how shattered and distant the father and daughter relationship is. 

The penultimate scene allowed for us to show how shattered Alice is. She closes the door of her bedroom and slides down it slowly, showing how the only place she feels safe is her bedroom. She has no where else to go and does not know what to do, as when we leave her, she is crying at the bottom her her bedroom door.

Here is a link to my film website, which has links to our social medias as well as having all of our film clips. This has our two hot-seating's for Gary and for Alice and Emily. The website also has our final short film on their as well. There are short paragraphs for each of the characters which give more backstory to them. 

On the website we also have a gallery section, which involves many behind the scenes shots of us making the short film. It shows the different camera angles we used as well as showing how we lit many of the scenes. 

There is a section which has photos from our Instagram account which shows similar pictures to our gallery, but with captions on where it is whilst giving context to the pictures. 

There is a section which has information about the actors and actresses. Each person has their own paragraph which gives their acting history as well as saying what other unique skills they bring to the short film.

I have been able to use what i discovered after researching postcards to help me make my actual postcard. I was able to look at the codes and conventions of film postcards and apply it to my own.

This includes using traditional conventions from a postcard such as the tagline, and reviews. As well as having three postcards that advertise their upcoming short film. 

From what i found i was able to use many of the useful things that other postcards also use. These include having a universal house theme, a tagline, and linking their social medias.

Editing

Final Cut Pro
We used Final Cut Pro in order to edit our short film. This allowed us to properly edit together all of our scenes, being able add sounds such as dramatic music as well as integrating a voice over throughout. Final Cut Pro was an easy to use software to use. It allowed us to upload all of our videos, including our ident, BBFC certificate and our actual clips from the short film. Final Cut Pro allowed us to collate our clips together, and allow them to make sense. 

Sound
Throughout our editing process we were able to integrate sound into our movie through adding non-diegetic sound, which allowed for us to create tension. Whilst also allowing us to add voice-overs which we were able to record straight onto final cut pro. The voice-over that we edited on by using Final Cut Pro allowed us to add further character development for Alice and her family. Showing how important something such as voice-over can be.

The Ident 
We created the Ident, and named the production studio 'No Name Productions'. We then decided on what to do for our Ident and settled on having Rosie shhh in three separate locations. We decide upon this to make it almost seem as if she was watching, with the last of the three being from a CCTV camera, which creates a sinister tone. We were able to create the three the ident by filming Rosie in three separate locations, doing the same movement which indicates a level of stalking. For our last of the three we used Giphy to allow us to use the Glitch filter which let our production name glitch in and out. This made the last of the three look much better and more official than without it. We then took the GIF we made in giphy and put it into Final Cut Pro and put the three together.

This is our BBFC certificate for our short film, Silent Voices. We decided to give our film a age rating of a 12A as there are no scenes in the short film which require it to be any higher. Instagram

We created an Instagram called No Name Productions in order to market our short film out to the public. We also showed behind the scenes shots of filming and making the film. This gives insight into the production of the movie for the audiences and the viewers of the movie. 

It also shows how we shot some of the movie shots, by showing the actors, whilst also showing the tripod and camera filming them. Our Instagram also features how we set up shots, such as our first post which showed how we filmed the photo changing each day.

Twitter
We created a Twitter account called No Name Production. We did this as a way to potentially reach a wider audience, which would in turn allow more people to view our short film. Similarly to our Instagram it has behind the scenes shots of how we created the short film, as well as having the release date in our bio.

We have the No Name Production ident as our profile picture in both our Instagram and our Twitter, it is a clear and easy to see picture. It is noticeable and therefore the audience will be able to recognise it easily.

HOT SEATING: GARY 

This hot seating for the father, Gary, shows the character answering questions, it allows us to develop the character more. This further develops his character so that the audience are able to see what kind of person he is. How he does not really care or think about his two daughters, as he shows very little interest in what they are up to in their daily lives. He is shown to think like this as when being asked questions he gives a very vague response showing how he does not care or want to care about them. 

Gary is shown to being very cold, this is shown by his obvious love for Emily over Alice, as it is shown that he dislikes Alice. Whereas, when asked about Emily he says that she is "better" and that she is more of a "success". This could explain what happens in the short film, explaining how distant Alice is from her dad.  This short film also explores how Gary feels about his previous job, being a War Photographer. We can see how he does not want to talk about it, as he becomes angry when he is asked further about his previous job. This suggests how he could have been affected mentally in a way that has changed him forever.

Behind the Scenes

To shoot our hot-seating we shot on a Canon 370. We used a Canon 370 as well as a tripod, this allowed us to get the perfect height to allow the shot to look like it was from an interview. This gives more depth to the hot seating. We set up in my Dads study room, and then we used his desk, light and some pieces of scrap paper to make it looks as if he was previously working. The suit that he is wearing also tells us that he has an important job, which could be in somewhere such as London. However, the distasteful attitude that he portrays was created around this, to make him seem like a cold, heartless character who does not focus on anything apart from work.

We have many different social groups throughout our short film. Ranging from an ethical war photographer to a troubled teenage girl. 

Ethical War Photographer

We used this social group in our film as it shows a troubled man who has to live with the guilt and trauma that hes witnessed. War Photographers have to go into battles to take photos of men and women risking their life. They are forced to see bloodshed throughout their career. Leading to many of them feeling guilty and responsible for not being able to help.

This job is able to represent the fathers character, as we are able to show how he still has to carry what he has seen around with him for the rest of his life. With our short film able to show how the father, Gary, has issues with dealing with his PTSD. With our film looking at how difficult it also is for the family members such as the daughters and mother to deal with.

Teenagers

One main part of our movie is how Alice, a teenager girl, is around her family and how she has grown up in an unloving home. Alice is our protagonist and we have depicted her as a loving and caring person, who does not receive the same treatment of love back form her family. Being seen as the reject, which lots of teenagers would be able to relate with.

Parents

We featured our protagonists relationship to her parents in our short film. We did this as it gives further background to why Alice is the way she is. The parents show love and affection towards on daughter Emily, whereas completely sidelining their other daughter Alice.

I chose to look at this photo as it is one of the rare photos from the Vietnam was which shows compassion. Showing how the brutality of the war has affected everyone around the people walking with them. With the depressing thoughts of how the child's parents have most likely been killed from the war. 

PLANNING: CHARACTER DEVELOPMENT ALICE AND EMILY

Alice, Hot seating to develop her character 

This is going to be set in a therapy room, taking about her family dynamic and how she sees herself. We are going to explore the role of the parents in the family and how it is represented and seen by the daughter, Alice. From this it will enable the audience to be able to possibly relate and have a deeper background into the lives of the characters and how unique each character is. 

Alice who is usually quite will give her point of view from the family by answering the questions she is asked. This will show how she sees her family and also develop how she feels and how she expresses herself. The relationship with her sister will be explored as there is jealously as Emily is seen by the parents as the spotlight child. It will be interesting to explore how this has affected the relationship between the two sisters. The mother daughter dynamic between Alice and her mother, Claire, will be explored as well as Claire is a nice and comforting mother who looks after both her daughters equally. This contrasts from how Alice's dad, Gary, treats her as Alice is seen as a disappointment in his eyes as Emily is much smarter and more successful than Alice.

This is our actual hot seating which we filmed on a Canon 370 in our schools drama studio. We did this in order to give insight into the characters and provide them with more depth. 

From this we are able to see how nervous and anxious Alice is compared to how laid back Emily is. It also represents how Alice is somewhat of an outcast in the family, with Emily being the one the parents focus and give more attention to. 

It gives background to the characters, allowing the audience to understand them and possibly relate to characters like Alice through the anxiousness she portrays.

Our main location is set in an ordinary, average house. We decided this as our audience will be able to relate which will draw them in to watch more. Similarly we have used typical rooms for the parents room and our protagonists (Alice's) room. However, we have used a dark, eerie images creating a spine chilling scene: when the sister is crawling up from underneath the bed. This will be shown in a POV shot which creates personal aspect of the protagonist. All the other images have resembled similar rooms within the house we are filming in, we got images that are similar as can be. The image on the top left is the actual house we will be filming in.

Creating a props list is very helpful as it makes it clear on what all of us need to buy, have and bring to the filming sessions and what to include in our short film. Adding props in make a scene feel more authentic or help actors play their role more adequately. Even though our props are small they add a realistic element to our film. As we are filming in a house we need to make it as homely as we can which props will help immensely.

PLANNING: RISK ASSESSMENT

RISK ASSESSMENT

For our Risk Assessment, we have grouped together dangerous hazard that we believe can cause a greater risk when filming. We have identified the hazard and justified strategies to reduce the hazard. Finally we added if it was a low or high risk. With this analysis this will give us a full picture on what we may expect and can prepare ourselves for.

• Danger coming from falls or slips - Tripping over objects on the ground and injuring yourself. We can reduce the risk of this occurring by wearing appropriate footwear and being cautious. This is a very low risk level 

• Weather - When filming outside making it possible to not be caught in heavy rainfall and making sure that the surfaces walking on are steady and will not become slippery. Also to wear appropriate clothing to prevent being cold. We can prevent this by planning ahead and checking the weather a day or couple hours before. This is a low risk level

• Making our way to destination - Making sure that roads are clear to prevent any danger from oncoming vehicles. We can prepare and be safe for this by checking every time we cross a road by looking both ways before walking out. Low risk level
